REPATRIATION
The rye reaped in its season
the wild birdseed
an oak tree at the end of the harvest
or maybe all out of music
a necromanteion at the turning on the right
a lady-hawk ready to grab you with a vengeance
while the purple shell, the horizon
reveals two of its secrets.
I go back over them again
but where exactly would you be by now
and how would we tie together
all that we have learned with so much effort
with the ones that await us from tomorrow.
A pair of partridges
from the homeland of memories
stand short, immediately point to the sky
all the meanings, of course, lie in the thorns
the truths in the wild grass.
ΕΠΑΝΑΠΑΤΡΙΣΜΟΣ
Ἡ θερισμένη στήν ὥρα της σίκαλη
τό ἄγριο κανναβούρι
μιά βελανιδιά στήν ἄκρη τοῦ θέρους
ἤ μήπως ἀπό μουσική ὅλα
ἕνα νεκρομαντεῖο στή στροφή δεξιά
ἡ γερακίνα ἕτοιμη νά σ’ ἁρπάξει γιά τά καλά
ἐνῶ τό πορφυρό κοχύλι, ὁ ὁρίζοντας
ἀνοίγει δύο ἀπό τά μυστικά του.
Τά βλέπω ξανά ὅλα αὐτά
ἀλλά ἐσύ ποῦ ἀκριβῶς νά εἶσαι τώρα πιά
καί πῶς νά δέσουν ἄραγε ὅλα μαζί
πού μάθαμε ὥς σήμερα μέ τόσο κόπο
μέ ὅσα μᾶς περιμένουν ἀπό αὔριο.
Ἕνα ζευγάρι πέρδικες
ἀπό τήν πατρίδα τῶν ἀναμνήσεων
κοντοστέκονται, δείχνουν ἀμέσως οὐρανό
ὅλες οἱ σημασίες βέβαια στ’ ἀγκάθια
στ’ ἀγριόχορτα οἱ ἀλήθειες.

THERE IT IS
For the coming summers
for what they already promise us
and make our day
we do not need to wait
let us just look each other in the eye
not hastily and frivolously
as usually happens
with that decency of habit
and the decline of these times
but, holding each other’s hands
undivided, with devotion at last
let us just stay deep into

Γιά τά καλοκαίρια πού ἔρχονται
γιά ὅσα μᾶς ὑπόσχονται ἀπό τώρα

δέν χρειάζεται νά περιμένουμε
ἄς κοιταχτοῦμε μόνο στά μάτια

ὅπως συνήθως συμβαίνει
μ’ ἐκείνη τήν εὐπρέπεια τῆς συνήθειας

Διότι τό νερό θά τά παρασύρει ὅλα στό τέλος
ὅπως σέ ἐκείνη τήν ταινία πού ἤθελες νά τήν ξαναδοῦμε
ὁπωσδήποτε τό καλοκαίρι
κι ἦρθε τό κύμα, ἀνέβηκε ὥς τά μάτια
νά σκεπάσει τήν ἔπαρση γιά πάντα νά μείνει τό σημάδι
ἐκεῖ πού ἔβλεπες τήν ἀλλαγή τῆς φωνῆς μας σέ βάραθρο
ὅταν τίποτε δέν ἔμενε στή θέση του πιά
ἐκτός ἀπό τό ὄνομά μας
χαραγμένο ἤδη π.Χ. στή φλούδα ἑνός μυστικοῦ
καθώς ἀνεβαίνει τώρα στήν πλάτη τῆς θεᾶς

Βιογραφικό
George Veis was born in Athens in 1955. He is a member of the Society of Greek Writers. He has served for over 35 years as a diplomat of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (New York, Dortmund, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Macao, Beijing, Seoul, Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Central African Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, Somalia, Indonesia, Malaysia , Sultanate of Brunei, et al). In 2012 he was awarded the Order of the Phoenix for his services to the
diplomatic corps. In 2015 he was appointed Greek Ambassador to UNESCO. He has been honored three times with the State Literary Award for his travel memoirs. Also the Academy of Athens awarded twice his poetry (2008 and 2014). His poems have been translated into seven European languages, Indonesian and Chinese. Since 1974 he has published over thirty books, poems, travel memoirs, essays, translations, reviews, editorials. His fifteenth poetry collection Encampment, Athens: Ypsilon Books 2023, is the most recent.

Ο Γιώργος Βέης γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1955. Είναι μέλος της Εταιρείας Συγγραφέων. Υπηρετεί για πάνω από 35 χρόνια στο Διπλωματικό Κλάδο του Υπουργείου Εξωτερικών (Νέα Υόρκη, Ντόρτμουντ, Μελβούρνη, Χονγκ Κονγκ, Μακάο, Πεκίνο, Σεούλ, Καμερούν, Τσαντ, Γκαμπόν, Κεντροαφρικανική Δημοκρατία Γουινέα του Ισημερινού, Σουδάν, Σομαλία, Ινδονησία, Μαλαισία, Σουλτανάτο του Μπρουνέι, κ.ά). Το 2012 του απονεμήθηκε ο Ανώτερος Ταξιάρχης του Φοίνικος για τις υπηρεσίες του στο διπλωματικό σώμα.Το 2015 διορίστηκε Μόνιμος Αντιπρόσωπος της Ελλάδας στην UNESCO.Έχει τιμηθεί τρεις φορές με το Κρατικό λογοτεχνικό Βραβείο Μαρτυρίας- Βιογραφίας – Χρονικού – Ταξιδιωτικής Λογοτεχνίας. Επίσης για την ποίησή του έχει λάβει το Βραβείο Λάμπρος Πορφύρας της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών το 2007 και το 2014 το Βραβείο Ποίησης του Ιδρύματος Πέτρου Χάρη της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών, για το σύνολο του έργου του. Ποιήματά του έχουν μεταφραστεί σε επτά ευρωπαϊκές γλώσσες, ινδονησιακά και κινεζικά.Από το 1974 μέχρι σήμερα έχει εκδώσει πάνω από τριάντα βιβλία, ποιήματα, ταξιδιωτικά χρονικά, δοκίμια, μεταφράσεις, κριτικές, επιμέλειες. Η δέκατη πέμπτη ποιητική του συλλογή Καταυλισμός, Ύψιλον 2023, είναι η πιο πρόσφατη.
Margarita Papageorgiou was born in Athens and lives in Chalkida. She is a graduate of the Department of Philology, Medieval and Modern Greek Studies, of University of Athens. Her translations of English and Spanish poetry, as well as book reviews, have been printed in literary journals. Her poetry collections: Exotic species, Saixpirikon 2022, Kisses in the void, Melani 2020, Metaplasmata, Saixpirikon 2017, Aliploos Sky, Gavrielidis 2015.
